Tough to summarize, but each play-through could be totally different from the last, without scripting. The dynamic campaigns were very involved but the game sorely lacked multiplayer.
The AI would usually act appropriately based on the strength of AI forces compared to the player. It seemed like the AI would do a decent job of probing the player's strength and position on the map, then using a combination of programmed but not scripted tactics like either staying defensive, or making concentrated attacks, with envelopments, and even ruses to draw the player into an ambush. Then sometimes the AI would just bum rush through open ground - not sure if that was a flaw or programmed to keep the player always on their toes.
The AI also had the ability to actually improve over time within an engagement, so you could remove the mission timer and the AI would actually become more effective as it identified your overall use of units on the map.
