Media player keeps popping up for download files

This might be why WMP keeps popping up. Maybe it thinks there is a media extender out there that it needs to serve. Anyway, let's turn this off, if you haven't already with the service. Restarting did not help. I have not contacted the manufacture, I assume you mean of the computer? The computer is a Dell Inspiron I purchased it directly from Dell in February My understanding is Dell is not responsible for software Vista issues?

I cannot imagine this being a hardware issue. If Dell does address a Vista issue they indicate they will charge me big bucks. I may go that way as a last resort only. Is there any easy way to move WMP from the parent Windows Explorer without screwing everything else up? I even went to my network and sharing center and turned off network discovery, although I'm not sure this was good idea.

It didn't help anyway. Is it time for me to call Dell or Microsoft and see if they can walk me through solving this.? I will spend the money if necessary to get this fixed as it's very cumbersome to have WMP opening and wanting to be the top active window.

It makes for some very quick and repetitive mouse clicks, and sometimes almost impossible navigation. Also, which would be better to try first, Dell or Microsoft? I don't recall anything in this thread about updates. Have you installed SP1, and if so, did this problem occur after? It didn't just slowly phase in, it wasn't there one day, and then it was there all the time. My keyboard is the same age as my notebook, which was purchased in February I'm not strongly suspecting a sticky hotkey, although I guess anything is possible.

I'm like you, I'm more inclined to suspect a virus, or some sort of registry problem. If it is a virus, Defender Pro cannot find it as I did a whole computer scan and it came up with nothing. By the way, how did you solve this problem on your old XP machine? Actually the problem started about one month after installing SP1 see my last post.

It seems strange that if SP1 caused it that it took a month to do so, but I guess anything is possible. I think best is to call, they are very helpful. I was beginning to think you were the only person who ever had this problem but, as usual, you're not alone. Since this other person traced his problem to Dell hardware, you might try contacting them if you haven't already talked to MS or Dell. If you bought your system in February of this year, I would think you would have at least 3 months of support from Dell which would mean it would still be under a service contract.

While the problem you reference in another forum sounds very similar to mine. Thanks for referring it though, as I found it very interesting and had the solution fit I would have been overjoyed. I have already contacted MS support by email probably should have called and might yet , but they have 36 business hours three days? That will be sometime Monday or Tuesday. I'll post the results of my MS support contact, especially if it ends up resolving my problem so that it may help any others if they ever encounter this problem.

I'm still almost comvinced at this point that the problem can be solved by some kind of change in the startup programs, services, or registry entries, as booting up with basic services only makes the problem go away. Thanks again to you and all others who posted on this topic. I appreciate the helpfulness attitude of everyone.

Microsoft did respond and offered various things for me to try most of which I've already tried , but none solved my problem with WMP opening on its own repeatedly and not closing. I reported back Sunday, 27 April 08, and have not heard from them since. Maybe they gave up? At this point I emailed Logitech support with my problem. They offered various things for me to try. This made my my mouse behave fairly normal, but WMP kept opening and could not be closed.

It said it found a composite USB driver, but had trouble loading it. It suggested I contact the mouse manufacturer logitech for an updated driver. Logitech's website indicates that they have no updated Vista drivers for the MX, but that I should use the native drivers that comes with Vista.

Back to square one. I reported this to Logitech and they have yet to get back to me. I'm not too hot about manufacturers that do not update drivers for later OSs. I'll see what Logitech offers next. At any rate, I guess I've sort of solved my problem by using my Logitech V wireless mouse. I'm not too fond of touchpads, therefore that's why I use a mouse.

Gratz, so i was roughly there, i suspected some sort of hotkey, and that was your mouse!! The Best Tech Newsletter Anywhere. Can you help us improve? Resolved my issue. Clear instructions. Easy to follow. No jargon. Pictures helped. Didn't match my screen. Incorrect instructions. Too technical.
